Schoeller Allibert

Pooling

Innovating your logistics for a better world

Schoeller Allibert

55 years of innovative solutions for Poolers and RTP service providers

At the heart of RTP service provision

Returnable Transit Packaging (RTP) is all about the removal of packaging waste from the supply chain, whilst at the same time maximising logistical efficiency.

The provision of pooling services with RTP takes this efficiency and sustainability to a whole new level, as groups of users pool their packaging requirements which, in turn, minimises their capital investment in assets, minimises empty return loads and maximises asset utilisation throughout the calendar year.

Over the past 20 years, pooling services have grown increasingly
popular – and Schoeller Allibert’s constant innovation has seen the creation
of many products that have literally made the RTP service industry what
it is today.

Whether the application is in Retail, Automotive or Food, you can be sure
that Schoeller Allibert either already has the solution, or has the pedigree
to innovate a new product to meet the ever changing needs of the modern
logistical world!

EFSA accredited food-safe recycling process

RTP Poolers and Service Providers can now have their end of life or redundant assets recycled into new food grade containers using Schoeller Allibert’s EFSA accredited recycling process – the first in the industry!

Prior to EFSA accreditation, containers made from recycled material could not re-enter the food supply chain within the European Union.

Now, when food-grade crates need replacing, they can be returned to one of Schoeller Allibert’s three in-house EFSA approved facilities for recycling.

Providing they have been used in a closed/controlled loop distribution
system (which allows for traceability of provenance) Schoeller Allibert
can recycle used HDPE and PP material and mould into new crates for
use in the food and fresh produce supply chain.

The products moulded from recycled material are fully compliant with
Article 4 of the EU Regulation 282/2008, providing customers with
a guarantee of safety and suitability for food contact.

Standard and customised solutions

From fresh produce at the point of harvest, to in store retail merchandising and heavy duty automotive applications...

The pooling sector covers a huge range of industries and applications, with packaging requirements and features that are specific to each activity. In addition to the industry’s most extensive range of standard products, Schoeller Allibert develops unique reusable packaging solutions:

  • Hand held containers that stack, nest and fold
  • Plastic pallets from cleanrooms to logistics
  • Rigid and folding large pallet containers
  • IBC’s...

All of our products are designed to meet both end user and Pooler
requirements which means both working in a variety of supply chain
environments, and being easy to handle, clean and maintain.

All containers are designed to optimise seamless process flow and
maximise logistical efficiency. They are designed and manufactured
to withstand harsh environmental conditions, from field to
superstore to factory floor, and to ensure maximum life span.

When used in food applications, Schoeller Allibert products are food
contact certified and in compliance with the latest European and
International Food safety standards. Our designs avoids dirt traps
and allow for easy washing.

In-house design and testing facilities

As global market leaders, Schoeller Allibert has the largest design and technology resources in the industry.

These activities are supported by our state of the art test centre in Hardenberg, the Netherlands.

Our experienced designers and engineers are located strategically around our European regions to ensure that they are on hand to personally meet customers, and build a first hand understanding of their requirements.

Sustainable solutions for automated handling and tracking

In a world focused on labour saving, automated handling systems are an ever increasing feature of many supply chains. In line with this requirement, many of Schoeller Allibert’s solutions are designed to be compatible with automated handling equipment. For example, unfolding, stacking on pillars or bars can achieved using robots. Many of our bespoke packaging solutions have been developed in close cooperation with both industry leaders, and their system integrators.

Unique patented base and rim designs allows for fast movement and palletisation along with long term storage on mini-load warehousing systems with no base deflection. Especially important in food retail applications, all containers designed with ease of automated washing in mind.

Since 1998, we have been integrating RFID tags into our boxes,
pallets and containers in all kinds of segments. This serves
to enhance cycle times, increase the profitability of packaging
fleets and to reduce losses.

Being kind to the environment almost always means that you are
being economically efficient too! In addition to being designed
to minimise the carbon foot print of your supply chain, all of our
products are recyclable. Our recycling processes were approved
by EFSA in 2014. This allows us to offer food approved products
made from your old food packaging containers - which further
reduces your packaging cost and carbon footprint!

Whatever the application, Schoeller Allibert has the solution!

Trading an old pool for a new one...

INITIAL SITUATION

Sainsbury’s had two separate pools - Maxinest® trays used for fresh produce and old Linpac Universals (180º stack-nest) for chilled meat, fish & ready meals. To drive supply chain efficiencies, having a single Maxinest® pool would save sortation costs, improve pool utilisation and increase vehicle fill. But the cost of manufacturing virgin crates was prohibitive.

SOLUTION

Schoeller Allibert recycled their old fleet of plastic trays into new EFSA approved food-safe Maxinest® trays.

BENEFITS

A fully inter-stacking crate pool, improving ease of operation in stores and depots and supports Sainsbury’s ambition to adopt more sustainable practices.

Our 360° approach

01. Supply chain and processes survey

Using returnable transit plastic packaging starts with a complete survey of the existing supply chain organisation, efficiency and cost of each customer.

Our team of local supply chain specialists, can help survey your current packaging and logistics operations to offer clever cost saving solutions.

Our 360° approach

02. Standardised cost saving logistic solutions

All of our supply chain packaging solutions have standardised dimensions to be fully compatible with all handling and logistics equipment.

Exceptional stacking strength allow taller columns of containers to maximise use of space in warehouse storage, distribution vehicles and back of store. Folding or nesting when empty, our packaging solutions reduce return logistics costs and help reduce carbon footprint.

Schoeller Allibert RTP is used at every stage of the supply chain; from harvesting of fresh produce, fish boxing at sea, meat portioning at the abattoir, manufacturing of electrical goods, clothing, etc. all the way through the supply chain to retail point-of-sale display.

Our 360° approach

03. Bespoke packaging solutions tailored to your needs

Inside standard reusable transit packaging, the shape and nature of the product carried may require specific materials, tray shapes and ventilation. A special base may be required to withstand automated storage systems.

To customize our standard solutions to your special needs our teams will work in close cooperation with local or global partners. They will define, design and offer bespoke packaging solutions avoiding any contamination and damages. Enabling optimised cost and life time.

Equally, standard crates and containers can be manufactured in your corporate colours and printed with your brand and/or logo. This serves to promotes your corporate identity, reduce the risk of theft and loss and also to aid sortation in busy distribution centres.

Our 360° approach

04. Renting and pooling through our partners

As a specialist innovator and manufacturer of RTP our focus is on providing you with the right products with which to serve your clients. Schoeller Allibert is often able to recommend pooling partners to end user customers that would prefer a pooled or rented solution, rather than to invest in their own fleet of RTP.

Our 360° approach

05. Repairs and maintenance

We offer a comprehensive repair and maintenance service, suitable for complex products subject to heavy use in industrial environments. Contracts are local and tailored to specific circumstances.

They can include replacement parts, on site repairs, or regular maintenance and upgrades. Refurbishment: Our refurbishment option, based on local agreement with Schoeller Allibert, offers an opportunity for customers to gain a cost-down on packaging for quality refurbishment to extend the life of your fleet.

Our 360° approach

06. Food approved recycling services

Recyclability is an important feature of returnable plastic packaging systems. It is even more crucial for food & grocery retailers as only food approved plastic materials can be used. Schoeller Allibert is one of the first RTP manufacturers to gain EFSA approval which covers the recycling and remolding processes at our facilities in Murcia, Spain, Monheim, Germany and Hardenberg, The Netherlands.

The accredited process which covers the recycling of food-grade HDPE and PP crates into new containers for food contact, has been developed in order to help food processing companies and retailers meet increasing stringent sustainability targets. No pollution, no waste. We take care of all the necessary steps, creating a 100% sustainable packaging cycle.

Using fewer scarce commodities is an important development for the packaging industry. By focusing on recycling, companies can considerably reduce their purchase of commodities and supplies. This is an important contribution to saving our environment. We feel a responsibility to support and endorse this positive development.
